The design has actually been around for a couple of years now, but is now available in the UK. He worked on the Code 0’s design with Yves Parlier who needs no further introduction here. She’s designed by Romaric Neyhousser, best known for his work with Verdier on yachts such as Comanche. Yet beneath that shiny veneer there is some real substance. It’s the hipster’s approach to sailing, the deconstructed coffee of the yachting world. Tofinou, Saffier, Brenta, Huzar and Wally all have variations on this theme of a fast daysailer with modern design characteristics and classic, retro styling. The concept is not entirely original but it’s highly laudable. You want to look good and go fast? Here’s your boat. But I ask you, what do you want a yacht for? Transporting bulk cargo? Drinking Bisto in the drizzle off Cowes? Forget it. There’s no standing headroom, low guard rails and with that low freeboard, she’s going to be a wet boat. First and foremost to look good and secondly to sail fast. Which brings me to the concept behind the Code 0. The clothes we wear, the cars we drive – like it of not – we are making a statement about who we are. There may be some hardy utilitarians out there who argue that winning is everything and to hell with the rest but most of us have enough vanity to covet admiring glances. When we arrive at a marina after winning a race, we want people to coo admiringly. Many of us also want our boat to look good. Yet there’s something else too and it is important. You’re after glory hubris and a chance to prove yourself against other human beings. So the question is, what do you want to gain from owning one? If you’re into racing, the bottom line is you want your yacht to sail faster than everyone else’s yacht. If you choose to own one it is not essential for your survival in the hunter gatherer sense of the word.
